Mission and Vision
Mission
Our mission is to make active transportation accessible through education and sustainable innovation.
Sustainable Streets believes that active transportation, such as walking and bicycling, will help build healthy, vibrant, livable communities. We also believe that pedestrians and bicyclists have the right to travel safely and effectively on public right of ways. Our programs teach practical skills that make active transportation a safe choice.
Mobility is an essential part of our society, but personal transportation systems need to become more efficient, more equitable and less disruptive, both socially and environmentally. Growing mobility demand cannot be met by expanding current patterns without severe social and environmental implications.
Sustainable Streets’ programs and services offer solutions that acknowledge the needs of society to move freely, gain access, communicate, trade and establish relationships without sacrificing other essential human or ecological values today or in the future.
Vision
Sustainable Streets envisions streetscapes and transportation systems that harmonize community, nature and the human spirit, to support equitable social interactions, environmentally-sensitive resource use, healthy physical activity and overall wellbeing.
Purpose
Sustainable Streets provides community participation, education, encouragement, planning and streetscape design assistance for cities, schools, employers, businesses and other organizations in the Los Angeles region and beyond, with an emphasis on more sustainable communities and mobility patterns.
Organizational Goals
Sustainable Streets proposes seven goals that, if achieved, would improve the prospect for sustainable mobility in future generations:
